Prime Tower appears in the police drama “Tatort (Crime Scene)”

March 2021

At the end of January the Prime Tower Areal became a “Tatort”. Read on and find out which role the Prime Tower plays in all of this.

A black Mercedes is parked on the Prime Tower Areal. A crowd of masked people, around 20 of them, are standing around the car. It is so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Suddenly someone gesticulates wildly in our direction and gestures to us to stay back. Oops, have we wandered right into the middle of the filming of a new episode of the police drama “Tatort”? Sorry! Will they have to film the scene all over again because of us? We make our apologies and tiptoe round the Prime Tower. There we run into the cheerful figure of Alexis Lieber, Unit Manager and Location Scout for this production. He gives us an idea of what goes on behind the scenes and talks about the challenges of filming in times like these. Why was the Prime Tower chosen as the location? Because the Tower expresses something strong and powerful. And the setting fits the story perfectly. They are filming on the Prime Tower Areal, in the foyer, at the security gate and on the 32nd floor in the offices of Swiss Prime Site.

The repurposing of Rivington & Sons
The conditions for filming are good, despite the coronavirus. Because of the requirement to work from home, the Prime Tower is practically empty – and however painful the closure of the food service businesses may be, it’s a stroke of luck for filming. The premises at Rivington & Sons have been quickly repurposed as an office, and make-up and wardrobe sections. Lieber relates that the actors and extras are tested for coronavirus every morning before filming using a rapid antigen test. The time spent without a nose and mouth covering is reduced to a minimum. All other members of the crew wear a mask at all times.

The masks come off for lunch
We walk round the corner towards the Maag Halle. Alexis Lieber shows us where the crew eats together. The smell of food hangs in the air, it goes without saying that Rémy and his team prepare lunch in the food truck fresh every day. That’s where everyone likes to sit and eat together. The bench and table sets in the hall are arranged at a suitable distance and each is set for four people, with plexiglass dividers in the middle of the table for extra protection. High-performance UVC air purifiers are also deployed. “Lunch time is the only time of the day when you see your counterpart without a mask,” Lieber says with a grin, “Sometimes it’s the first time I get to see what someone actually looks like, because we often have new people on the set.”

Eight to nine hours of filming for six minutes of screen time
When we are lounging comfortably on the sofa on a Sunday evening watching “Tatort”, we sometimes forget how much work goes into it. They film for 22 days for a single episode, with a crew of around 50. And the days are long. Lieber tells us he has been there since 5.30 am. On average there are eight to nine hours of filming every day – plus a few hours more for setting up and dismantling the set. They will be filming here at the Prime Tower for three days. On TV, that’s equivalent to around 15 to 20 minutes of screen time. We are excited and are already looking forward to watching the “Tatort” officers Carol Schuler and Anna Pieri Zuercher fighting for law and order once again.

The episode of “Tatort” filmed in and around the Prime Tower is expected to be broadcast on SRF 1 in 2022. The previous two episodes of the Zurich “Tatort” can be downloaded from Play Suisse free of charge:

Roland Berger AG – our new arrival at the Prime Tower

March 2021

Roland Berger AG has been a tenant at the Prime Tower since the beginning of January 2021. We talked to the managing partners Sven Siepen (on the left) and Matthias Hanke (on the right) about their new location in Zurich.

1. In a few words: who is Roland Berger AG?

Matthias Hanke: international strategy consultants who have been advising clients from various industries on their business problems for over 50 years.

Sven Siepen: what also makes Roland Berger special is that we have our roots in Europe, unlike other strategy consultants, and we are very proud of that, not just because of our origins, but also because of our cultural understanding. It’s actually a very broad spectrum from an Italian business culture to a Scandinavian one; the Germans are very different from the French. We can handle that and adapt to our clients very well.

2. Why did you choose the Prime Tower location?

Matthias Hanke: we were previously in Seefeld, a beautiful location, in a very attractive area. The tenancy was up for renewal and we decided on a change. The Prime Tower is very conveniently situated for transport links and what we especially like is that we are all on one floor. In Seefeld the offices were spread over five floors.

Sven Siepen: we are looking forward to enjoying an attractive, creative working environment and spacious, bright offices that will encourage greater productivity and innovation, and help us develop winning strategies together with our clients. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait a little longer to do this at Prime Tower due to the current lockdown and the work from home rules.

3. What makes the Prime Tower special for you?

Sven Siepen: it’s modern, bright and has a great view of the mountains. Very nice people downstairs at reception, where we are greeted with a friendly smile every morning. Of course, it’s also a great neighbourhood and has changed a lot in the past 15, 20 years. I live in Zumikon in Oberland so you don’t come to this area very often, it’s very impressive how the neighbourhood has developed. A lot of work has been done here.

4. What were the biggest challenges this year?

Matthias Hanke: consulting is a people business, especially strategy consulting. Our strategy consulting is custom-made for our clients and adapted to their needs. Normally we work on site at the client and get new business through personal contacts. That is a challenge at the moment, of course. But it is has worked significantly better than we thought. Our business has developed well. The second challenge was with the teams. Our teams work very hard, and sometimes very long hours as well, so the team spirit is also important on a personal level. Arranging this while working from home has been a strain for the consultants.

Sven Siepen: yes, that’s exactly right, I’ve just had a long conversation with an employee who was complaining about only going from his bedroom to his home office every morning and then sitting in front of the team monitor. It sometimes feels very claustrophobic.

5. Personal contact with clients and colleagues is lacking. But have you been able to make up for that with digital solutions?

Matthias Hanke: technically yes, it has worked very well for us, only at some point I see a time limit to that. Whether it takes a year or eighteen months, it won’t work for ever. To those who are now saying we actually need a lot less office space, I’d say I am totally opposed to that. I still see the office as a place for meeting people, for inspiration, interaction and team building.

Sven Siepen: but that also means offices are changing. We now have an office concept here which is different from before: more open with more communication and meeting spaces. And I believe we will benefit a great deal from that. All the more so in the period after the coronavirus.

Food on the road!

March 2021

Do you feel the same way? As soon as the weather warms up a bit, you want to spend your lunch break outside. Give yourself a treat and enjoy the spring sunshine – fantastic. It’s great that a different food truck parks outside every lunch time from Monday to Friday and sells delicious street food straight from the mobile kitchen.

Do you fancy a smoked salmon burger or bagel? The salmon producer’s truck drives up every Monday. Every Wednesday, you’re tempted by the popular chicken pittas and falafel from Pitaria. Thursday is taco day: that’s when the team from La Chamaca conjure up authentic Mexican tacos. And just before the weekend, look for the juicy cheese steaks sizzling on the Grill n’ Roll. Whatever your taste, there is no shortage of culinary diversity.

And because street food has that feel-good factor, there will soon be a new arrival at the Prime Tower Areal: preparations are already under way for another food truck, located between Cubus and Hardbrücke. Stay tuned …
