High-altitude rescue à la Spiderman

July 2021

At the beginning of July, spectacular scenes played out at the Prime Tower: emergency personnel from Zurich rescue services were carrying out training on how to rescue people using window gondolas.

When two people are suddenly dangling from the Prime Tower façade on a Friday morning, this catches the attention of passers-by. A group of pre-school children could barely stop staring in amazement, and even adults – including many members of the media – were looking up spellbound. What looked like a cliff-hanger was an exercise for emergency personnel from the Zurich rescue services. And they had everything under control.

When the gondola stops
Training for a high-altitude rescue is carried out several times a year in a realistic environment so that we are well prepared in the event of an emergency. High-altitude rescue worker Pascal Hunziker tells us that they must successfully complete at least 70 hours of training every year. This means not only going up high, but also includes rescues down below if, for example, a construction worker is lying injured in an excavation pit or if someone has fallen into a shaft. Today, at the Prime Tower, the following scenario is being practised: the window gondola has a technical fault. Of all things, it stops on the 23rd floor. The worker is therefore stuck in the gondola and must be rescued. The window cleaner is played by Thomas Gerster, who on a normal working day has his feet firmly on the ground – he is the Technical Manager at Wincasa.

The rescue worker descends from above
Pascal Hunziker, the high-altitude rescue worker, abseils from the roof of the high-rise building in the façade lift. He secures himself and Thomas Gerster using special harnesses and cables. They are pulled out of the gondola together using a hoist and slowly abseil along the façade. Now, there are two guys literally hanging in the air. The spectacular scene has onlookers holding their breath. But, everything is going to plan. The weather conditions are perfect. No wind, rain or sun to complicate the exercise. Even a very hot summer day could become a problem as the façade can then heat up to almost 100 degrees. This would be an issue to the extent that the cable should not come into contact with anything more than 60 degrees Celsius.

Rescued!
The abseiling part is generally brief; both rescuer and patient, as the person to be rescued is known, arrive safely on the ground in a few minutes. The whole mission lasts around 40 minutes with the preparation and securing taking up most of the time. After his first Spiderman experience, Thomas Gerster says: “At first I thought this is pretty high, but I felt very secure at all times. Pascal Hunziker explained every individual step to me. And, yes, I would do it again!”

Preview of the future with Maaglive

July 2021

Over the next few years, Maaglive will rise up at the Maag Areal site. The project will supplement the office use that is dominant today at the Prime Tower site with housing, culture and restaurants. The heavily-frequented uses, spread out over the entire day, will revitalise the Maag Areal and create a place in the midst of Zurich West where people will want to spend time.

There is an optimistic mood at the Maag Areal. Currently, the planners are still at work, yet even now for those interested you can see what it will look like in future via the virtual exhibit. Podiums have been placed in different areas on the site enabling a sneak preview of the new district – simply scan the QR code on the podium.

How it all started
As part of the study commission for Maaglive, in 2019 eight architects were tasked with developing possible scenarios for the area behind the Prime Tower. The remit was for two project approaches: both with and without the Maag concert hall. Amongst the projects submitted, the Berlin firm of architects Sauerbruch Hutton was the leading contender. Its holistic approach was impressive. The idea is to upgrade the site, currently characterised by office use, with housing, culture and restaurants and to add a central plaza with trees. Additional green spaces should also help to reduce the heat in the city of Zurich. There are plans for the Maag site to be heavily-frequently throughout the day and also in the evening to revitalise and enrich the area.

The vision
Maaglive must be envisaged as follows: a residential tower with 14 storeys, a cultural centre and the existing K building, which will be protected in future as a historic landmark. The three buildings are laid out around a green plaza, forming the centre of the district and at the same time its green space. Together with the roof garden on top of the residential tower and the grassed roof of the K building, the green spaces will help to reduce the heat in Zürich West. The district plaza will be enhanced by new footpaths and cycle routes, as well as generous open spaces with seating areas, play areas and areas to relax in.

Around-the-clock use
The new Maag site is intended for use around the clock. This will be made possible by areas suitable for multiple uses and by the way the living, working and cultural environments interrelate. Therefore, for example, the high-rise building does not just house apartments but also a two-storey workspace and restaurants. The cultural, workshop and event spaces in the K building and in the cultural centre are enhanced by commercial and restaurant spaces. This creates a vibrant community, a place to live and work, to stay a while and to enjoy.
